Golf Ball Watermelon

My Dad retired this month! Yay!! Congratulations to my Dad! He has worked so hard and had a long commute each and every day!! Hope you enjoy your retirement Dad!! Love you!

To celebrate this great accomplishment we had a Golf Themed party! My contribution to this party was to make a Golf Ball Watermelon! This was a lot of fun to make as well as a lot of work but I am happy with the outcome!

When picking your watermelon try and find the roundest watermelon you can find.

I started by cleaning the watermelon. I used this Eat Cleaner Fruit & Veggie Wash

Or I also use:

  1. Mix a 1:3 ratio of vinegar to water in a spray bottle (preferably glass.)
  2. Add 10 – 20 drops of pure lemon oil, depending on how large your spray bottle is.

What you will need :

Instructions:

  • Wash the watermelon, pat dry.
Round Watermelon
  • On a cutting board, place the watermelon on its side and cut off 1/4”-1/2” from the stem end, being careful not to cut too deep into the white part of the rind. This will provide a sturdy base.
  • Using the paring knife, cut a 3-4” round circle in the top of the watermelon.
  • Use the melon baller to make shallow round divots into the rind of the watermelon to mimic the dimples in a golf ball. Next, using a kitchen knife peel thin layers of the rind off to expose the white underneath, being careful not the cut too deep or the red flesh will be exposed. Try to get as much of the green rind off so it will resemble a white golf ball.

Peeling a Watermelon
  • Hollow out the watermelon with a melon baller, reserving the watermelon pieces to make your melon balls to put back into your watermelon carving.

  • Put the watermelon balls back into the hollowed watermelon.
  • Place on a tray and add watermelon balls to serve. Decorate accordingly.
