The Ultimate 5-Minute DIY Wasp Trap (That Keeps Your Bees 100% Safe!) Ep. 11
We love honeybees and natural pollinators around here—but unwanted wasps crashing every outdoor gathering? Not so much! If wasps are taking over your yard, fruit trees, or outdoor seating, you don’t need harsh chemical sprays or expensive store-bought traps that catch every innocent bug in sight.
In this episode of Wasp Wednesday, I’m sharing my tried-and-true, bee-friendly DIY wasp bait that takes just 5 minutes to make, costs next to nothing, and works like absolute magic.
Why This Method Works (And Keeps Bees Safe!)
Unlike standard drowning traps that trap whatever stumbles inside, this secret weapon uses a simple mix of sweet juice and boric acid:
- Bee-Safe: Honeybees and native pollinators aren’t interested in this bait solution, so your garden buddies stay completely safe.
- Tackles the Entire Nest: Wasps take the bait back to their nest, eliminating the problem at the source rather than just catching a few random stray bugs.
- Multipurpose: It also helps deter ants and other unwanted yard pests.
What You’ll Need
- 3 Heaping Tablespoons of Boric Acid (available at hardware stores or online)
- Sweet Juice (Apple juice, Tropicana orange juice, or any sweet fruit juice)
- Mixing Jug with a lid or handle (for easy shaking)
- Empty Soda/Beverage Cans (with pop-tabs or small lids)
- Stick or Twig (placed inside the can to give wasps a perch)
- String or Twine (for hanging in trees or bushes)
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Mix the Solution: Add 3 heaping tablespoons of boric acid into your mixing jug.
- Add the Juice: Pour in your choice of sweet juice (apple juice or fruit juice works great!).
- Shake Well: Give the jug a thorough shake until the powder is fully dissolved. (Tip: You can let it sit for a day or two if needed so the acid dissolves completely).
- Prep the Cans: Fill each empty can about 1/4 full with the mixture.
- Add a Perch: Insert a small stick into the top opening so the wasps can easily land, feed, and fly out to take the bait back to the nest.
- Hang & Place: Tie string around the can tab/top and hang them around your property—especially in trees wasps love (like oak trees) or low near problem areas.
Pro-Tips for Maximum Success
- Switch Up the Flavor: Wasps can get smart! If you notice activity slowing down, switch up your juice type (e.g., rotate between apple juice, orange juice, and punch) to keep them interested.
- Check & Refill Regularly: Keep an eye on your cans throughout the season and top them off whenever they run low.
- Smear a Little on Top: Coat the outer top rim of the can with a drop of juice to help attract them faster.
