🐝Backyard Beekeeping for Beginners: Inspecting the Hive and Checking the Super

Welcome back to another episode of Bee Wednesday! If you’ve been following along, our backyard apiary has been quite busy over the last few weeks. Today, we are performing our third comprehensive beehive check, and it’s a big one.

We recently added a honey super to give our growing colony more room to expand, and today is the very first time we are pulling frames to see how they are handling the new space.

Prepping the Hive and Getting Ready

Before opening up the hive, getting the smoker ready is essential to keep the bees calm during the inspection. Wearing proper protective gear, including a ventilated bee suit and gloves, keeps the experience safe and focused. Once the smoke is going, it’s time to head out to the apiary enclosure to start the check.

Inspecting the Frames

As we carefully smoke and open up the hive top, the main goal is to look at the health of the comb, check the brood pattern, and ensure the queen has plenty of space to lay. Pulling out individual frames reveals beautiful, intricate honeycomb structures packed with bees.

During the inspection, we closely examine:

  • Brood Patterns: Looking for a tight, healthy pattern of capped brood which indicates a strong, productive queen.
  • Comb Building: Seeing how efficiently the worker bees are drawing out new wax comb.
  • Honey and Nectar Storage: Tracking where the colony is storing their food reserves to ensure they aren’t getting honey-bound in the lower boxes.

Checking the Honey Super for the First Time

The highlight of today’s check is looking directly into the super. Adding a super is an exciting step for beginners because it means the colony is strong enough to start expanding beyond its basic brood chambers. Pulling these upper frames gives us an inside look at how quickly they are moving upstairs to draw out comb and store nectar.

Check out  No, Spend Month

Watching the bees work so closely on the frames is always an amazing reminder of how organized and efficient a colony truly is. Everything is looking fantastic, and the bees are adjusting beautifully to their expanded home!
