What to eat and what not to eat can be super challenging and confusing! Here are 5 tips to help you improve your relationship with food.

Navigating through what to eat and what not to eat can be super challenging and confusing! Here are 5 tips to help you improve your relationship with food!

Quit the ALL or NOTHING mentality

Trying to follow a “perfect” diet is only going to make you fail because nobody can follow a perfect diet. We are human. Life is all about balance. A healthy day might include some healthy foods and some not-so-healthy foods. Slowly start adding more healthy foods to your day. What matters is what you do the majority of the time. For example, if you drop your phone on the ground. What do you do? You just pick it up where it dropped and carry on. You are not going to stomp on it and smash it just because you dropped it! Right? So if you eat something that is not on your diet doesn’t mean the whole day is ruined and you should just eat junk the rest of the day because you ate one special item.

Stop punishing yourself for what you ate yesterday (or last week)

Regretting past decisions isn’t going to help you get anywhere. Think about how can you nourish your body today?

Focus on QUALITY not QUANTITY

Start by eating mainly real foods. Try to eat only the foods – the kind of foods that come straight from nature, not from a factory.

Enjoy every bite of food you eat

Whether it’s a healthy salad or a not-so-healthy dessert, enjoy it! Appreciate the texture, the smell, the flavor, etc. Make sure you slow down and take your time to enjoy every single bite. Never rush through a meal.

Good tips. I think people definitely need to be reminded that making a couple of unhealthy food choices shouldn’t derail their whole mission of becoming healthier. Feeling guilty and stressing about it will only make the problem worse.

Great tips, I believe in eating healthy, but I also believe it’s ok to indulge at times, especially on special occasions. Life is too short; live a little!

I definitely revert to the “all or nothing” mentality all too often. I like your analogy of eating something “wrong” like dropping your phone: just pick it up and keep going instead of stomping on it! It’s a great reminder to just enjoy the moment but keep on going in the right direction!

This is so true! I think my biggest issue is knocking myself for the bad food choices. I generally do well but I have cravings for sweets! So after lunch I opted for watermelon as opposed to a s’mores brownie my MIL brought over the weekend. I feel better about today just for that decision. Balance is definitely key.
