DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner

If you are like me you spend a lot of time on your yoga mat.  And roll it out regularly at home, at the studio, and maybe even your local park. But how often do you actually clean your yoga mat?

Have you ever thought about the germs your beloved mat might be picking up to and from? Yoga mats can get really icky. #yuck

When you roll up your mat after your workout, you are rolling all of the germs, dirt, and grime and whatever is on the floor beneath you. Then when you unroll it next time, your mat has all of that nastiness on the very same surface where you put your hands, feet and even face!

If you do not clean your yoga mat after every use, you need to change that! You can purchase yoga mat cleaner sprays from many online or brick-and-mortar retailers, or you can make your own yoga mat cleaner at home with a few simple and inexpensive ingredients.

This DIY yoga mat cleaner spray is made with three simple essential oils: Melaleuca {tea tree}, lavender, and peppermint. Melaleuca {Tea tree} essential oil and Peppermint are antibacterial and antifungal. Lavender essential oil is an antibacterial oil with a relaxing and calming scent that relieves tension and is great for unwinding post-yoga.

You can add more lavender, or try other essential oil scents to your liking until you find a formula that is perfect for your needs. For instance, if you aren’t a fan of tea tree oil, you can substitute it with another antibacterial oil such as lemongrasseucalyptus.

Here is an easy DIY yoga mat cleaner spray recipe:

You have to try this DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner spray! Not only will it make your mat smell amazing it will also clean it! I have been totally obsessed with essential oils! You can really get creative with this spray too! Try different oils for a different smell. I would keep the melaleuca in there to help kill germs but there are so many wonderful oils out there.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup distilled water

1/4 cup alcohol-free witch hazel or white vinegar

5 drops Lavender essential oil

5 drops Peppermint essential oil

5 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil

3 drops Melaleuca essential oil

Glass spray bottle

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a glass spray bottle.
  2. Shake until combined.
  3. To use, spray on the mat and wipe dry with a towel.

Note: Not all yoga mats are treated the same. Using essential oils may ruin some yoga mats. Spray a test patch on a small part of your mat first to make sure it doesn’t affect it.
